Convert AVIF to WEBP — Free, Private, In Your Browser
A middle path: WEBP is far better supported than AVIF while staying much lighter than JPG or PNG. For images that stay on the web, it is often the sensible compromise. Runs entirely in your browser — your image never leaves your device.

Why convert AVIF to WEBP?
This one is unusual in that you are not really stepping backwards. AVIF and WEBP are both modern formats, but WEBP has several more years of support behind it — every browser, most CMS platforms, most image pipelines. If an AVIF file is causing trouble somewhere in your stack, moving to WEBP usually fixes it while keeping most of the size advantage, and it holds on to transparency along the way. If you need the file to work outside a browser entirely, JPG or PNG is the safer target.
When this conversion is the right call
- A CMS, theme or plugin that handles WEBP but chokes on AVIF
- Keeping files small for the web while widening compatibility
- Standardising a mixed image library on one modern format
- Preserving transparency that a JPG conversion would flatten
FAQ
Is WEBP worse than AVIF?
Slightly less efficient — an AVIF is typically a bit smaller at the same quality. WEBP wins on support, which is usually the reason for making this conversion.
Will the file grow?
A little, usually. The gain is that far more software will accept it, while it stays much smaller than the equivalent JPG or PNG.
Is my image uploaded anywhere?
No. The conversion happens entirely in your browser. Your image never leaves your device.
What is the maximum file size?
There's no hard limit — it depends on your device's memory. Most photos under 50 MB convert in under a second.
Why convert to WEBP?
WEBP is a modern image format developed by Google. It's typically 25-35% smaller than JPG and PNG at the same visual quality, which makes your web pages load faster.
What output quality do you use?
We use a high-quality preset (0.92) that balances visual fidelity and file size. PNG output is always lossless.
