- Job portals and college applications — 50 KB is the most common ceiling and a safe default when none is stated.
- Images on a website or blog — 100–200 KB keeps pages fast. Convert the result to WEBP afterwards to save roughly another third.
- Product photos for a store — 150–300 KB, because buyers zoom in and detail sells.
- Emailing or sharing a batch of photos — 500 KB each is invisible to the eye and sends easily.

Two things worth knowing before you start
Compression reduces file size, not pixel dimensions. If a form asks for both a size limit and specific dimensions, resize first and compress second — that order always produces a cleaner result, because the compressor then has fewer pixels to work with.
The lower the target, the more the source matters. A tightly cropped portrait survives 20 KB comfortably; a wide, detailed landscape at the same 20 KB will not. If a result looks rough, cropping away what you do not need is usually more effective than any setting.
